Non-targeted approaches: method validation and application
This research area focuses on the development and validation of novel analytical methods, based on chromatography and high-resolution mass spectrometry, for untargeted and omics applications in clinical, environmental and foodstuff fields.
Experimental activities include the analysis of emerging contaminants, both targeted and untargeted, in various environmental compartments (i.e. surface water, groundwater, wastewater, and soil) and biological fluids (plasma, urine, etc), metabolomics of plants, cells and diseases, other targeted and untargeted analysis.
To these aims, the following techniques are employed: liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry, ion exchange chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry, gas-chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry, head-space gas-chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry.

Volatile organic compounds and real-time mass spectrometry
This research area focuses on the development and application of real-time detection techniques for volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
Experimental activities include the development of chemical ionization techniques for real-time mass spectrometry, the analysis of VOCs in several biological systems of interest in plant science, food science and technology, health science, atmospheric science.
To this aims, the following techniques are employed: Proton Transfer Reaction – Mass Spectrometry (PTR-MS), Thermal Desorption – Gas Chromatography – Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS).

Current projects

Horizon Europe Project BIOBUILD (2024-2027)
In BIOBUILD, ACN group develops and validates a thermal desorption gas chromatography mass spectrometry (TD-GC-MS) method to detect volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from bio-composites, crucial for assessing indoor air quality.
Additionally, it tests and evaluates the demo sites built by project partners, conducting routine indoor air quality assessments and VOC sampling according to ISO 16000 guidelines.

Horizon Europe Project PURPEST (2023-2026)
In PurPest, ACN group is responsible for the study of volatiles released by the brown marmorated stink bug (Halyomorpha halys) at different growth stages and the attack-induced volatiles from host-plants.

Horizon Europe Project SENSAPEST (2025-2028)
In SensaPest, ACN group is responsible for the study of volatiles released by the brown marmorated stink bug (Halyomorpha halys) at different growth stages and the attack-induced volatiles from host-plants.
