Aperitivo is far more than just a pre-dinner drink in Italy. It is a beloved social ritual and a vital cultural pause that marks the transition from the workday to the evening. In Padua, this tradition is deeply woven into daily life, blending history, local flavors, and vibrant social energy. Paduans gather between 6:00 and 8:30 pm in historic squares, to meet friends and colleagues, to unwind, chat, and share small bites. Aperitivo is not about excess, but about balance — a convivial moment that celebrates community, tradition, and the simple pleasure of being together before dinner.

Typical aperitivo drinks in Padua reflect both Veneto tradition and modern tastes. The undisputed star is the Spritz, most commonly made with prosecco, soda, and your choice of Aperol (sweet), Campari (bitter), or Select (in-between). Wine lovers favor a glass of local prosecco or a light Veneto white wine (Lugana, for example).

Besides chips or nuts, the favored accompaniment is a tramezzino. A trammezzino is a small cold sandwich with different fillings. Try the tuna & egg, or the soppressa & cabbage!

Where?

  • The heart of the aperitivo scene beats in Piazza delle Erbe, Piazza della Frutta, Piazza dei Signori, or under the Salone, where outdoor tables and bar stools fill quickly and the atmosphere is animated, but relaxed.
  • For a younger easygoing athmosphere, close to the conference site, the Navigli and the Portello area offer a series of kiosks and open air tables.
  • For a more classy experience head to the Pedrocchi cafè.
Piazza dei Signori in the evening is one of the hotspots for Aperitivo
