- Congratulations to our new M.Sc. Graduates! During the recent winter graduation sessions, three students from our group successfully obtained their Master’s degrees with excellent results. Their thesis projects addressed key topics in structural biology that are central to our research activities, spanning the structural characterization of Mpro, Cyclophilin D and aspartate dehydrogenase. We warmly congratulate Luka Nikolic, Morgan Marinangeli and Sara Zuppa on this important achievement and wish them every success in their future careers.
- Just before Christmas, we visited the Human Technopole National Facilities to carry out our final experiments of the year, making use of cutting-edge technologies in structural biology and also enjoying some free time in Milan with good friends.
- Members of our research group took part in the GS 2025 – Workshop of the Interdisciplinary Sensors Group, entitled Sensors and biosensors as strategic tools for health, food safety, and environmental monitoring, held in Bologna from December 15 to 17, 2025. During the meeting, Agata Checchezzo, visiting fellow in our group, presented the latest results of our research activities focused on the development of bio-sensors for the detection of metals in water.

- 6-7/11/2025. Massimo and Simone participated in the 4D Structural Biology Workshop held at the TUM Institute for Advanced Study in Garching, Germany. They also had the opportunity to tour the Bavarian NMR centre, one of Europe’s leading centers for high-field NMR research.
- 27/09/2025. Our group took part in Science4All, the public science festival held at Palazzo Bo’, University of Padua. Our activity, titled “Sotto la lente di un microscopio ai raggi X: dalla struttura delle proteine alle applicazioni biomediche”, introduced visitors to the world of protein structure determination by X-ray diffraction.
- 26-26/09/2025. Prof. Gabriele Giachin attended the training course “Essentials of Doctoral Supervision” at the University of Padua – Beato Pellegrino Campus, led by Dr. Pirjo Nikander from Tampere University, Finland. The training focused on best practices for PhD supervision, including effective communication, feedback, and collaborative mentoring.

- 10/09/2025. We warmly congratulate Dr. Simone Fabbian for being awarded the 2024 GIDRM -Annalaura Segre & Donatella Capitani Fellowship for outstanding research in magnetic resonance. At the 52nd National Conference on Magnetic Resonance (Verona) he presented his talk: “Dissecting the Structural Complexity of the ATP Synthase OSCP Subunit through Integrative NMR, SAXS and Native MS.”

We congratulate Prof. Gabriele Giachin and collaborators for their new publication “Hidden β-γ Dehydrogenation Products in Long-Chain Fatty Acid Oxidation Unveiled by NMR: Implications on Lipid Metabolism” (ACS Bio & Med Chem Au, 2025).
On July 4, 2025, the Department of Chemical Sciences of the University of Padua hosted the event “50 Years of Biopolymers in Padua – Dedication to Mario Mammi”, celebrating half a century of research in biopolymer science and honoring the legacy of Prof. Mario Mammi, a pioneer in NMR spectroscopy and structural studies of peptides and proteins. The event, co-organized by Prof. Stefano Mammi, brought together colleagues, former students, and collaborators who shared scientific and personal memories of Prof. Mario Mammi’s fundamental contributions to chemical and biomolecular research. The symposium highlighted the historical development of biopolymer studies in Padua, the evolution of NMR methodologies, and their impact on structural chemistry and biomedical applications.
- June 2025. Remembering Prof. Alessandro Bagno
On June 25, 2025, the Department of Chemical Sciences of the University of Padua hosted the event “Chi conosce la chimica si fa Signore del mondo” to honor the memory of Prof. Alessandro Bagno, a brilliant chemist, passionate teacher, and inspiring mentor whose research left a lasting mark on the field of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and theoretical chemistry. The event, co-organized by Prof. Stefano Mammi, featured scientific and personal tributes from colleagues and former students, including Enzo Menna, Giacomo Saielli, and Federico Rastrelli. The talks highlighted Prof. Bagno’s pioneering contributions to NMR spectroscopy, quantum chemical modeling, and their applications to reaction mechanisms, paramagnetic systems, and food chemistry.
- June 2025. Christian Buratto and Simone Fabbian present their research at the French-Italian Joint Meeting (GFPP) in Aussois, France.
From June 22nd to 26th 2025, Christian and Simone participated in the French–Italian Joint Meeting of the GFPP (Groupe Français des Peptides et Protéines) held in Aussois, France. The meeting gathered scientists from both countries to discuss the latest advances in peptide and protein science, from structure and dynamics to biophysical methods and therapeutic applications.
- June 2025. Talk by Christian Buratto at DCSB 2025 – University of Trieste

We’re pleased to announce that Christian Buratto, Ph.D. student from our group presented his research at the Division of Biological Systems Chemistry (DCSB 2025) meeting, held at the University of Trieste on June 18-20, 2025. His talk, entitled “Ruthenium-based polyoxometalates as a possible chaperone in cryo-EM structure determination: a case study” introduced an innovative approach employing ruthenium-based polyoxometalates to facilitate cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) by acting as potential chemical chaperones.
- March 2025. Prof. Elisabetta Schievano interviewed on RAI 3 – Mi Manda Rai Tre. On March 1st, 2025, the TV program Mi Manda Rai Tre aired a special episode dedicated to the issue of honey adulteration. As part of the investigation, the Department of Chemical Sciences at the University of Padua contributed with its expertise in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, thanks to the work led by Prof. Elisabetta Schievano. Her research team has developed advanced NMR methodologies for the authentication of food products, enabling the identification of adulteration in honey and other complex natural matrices.
